Subject: The Congress IS a terrible sonding venue.
This is flat wrong. The Congress was a horrible sounding venue. I mean gawd awful. Concrete everywhere, no materials to deaden the reverb and a tryly amaturish crowd of young drunks creaming their heads off (I can't falut them for the latter..I was once young and drunk but I at least had the common sense not to be so right next to the tapers...whatever..). I have seen my share of Yonder over the last 6-7 years and this was the worst sounding venue I have heard. Ben did a fine job as always but you can only polish a T*rd so much...
I have compared Brian's 24bit, Christos' 16 bit and my 24bit Schoeps m/s of this and(ahhem...) I like my schoeps the most. It has a smother top end that Brian's c34 tapes and, while sightly more mono, cust out the room a bit more. I have not heard the 4011>Nagra (though Nagra's are de kine, I'm not so excited about the A>D on a Marantz CDR-600 and I'm not sure why it was run through an additional pre-amp). Also these mush have been the crew that set up by Ben so they were another 35' from stage...

Thanks to whoever uploaded it when my connection was tied up with non-archive friendly band seeds.
analog4011: I've been trying to get around to grabbing the B&K source but I'm still seeding both 16 and 24bit copies of WsP in WI from last weekend. I'm well aware of the importance of a pre amp. I've run a 148, 248, PSP2, PSP3, V2, V3, Beyer and various pro consoles and run tubes at home. I will say this though. A pre is not as important as the mics or placement. Given that crowd I'm having a hard time believing that Cards from 25' farther back will be better in that room than mid/side considering that both Brian and I, indipendently, wound up adding about +5dB with a hyper as a mid cap. Also, I know full well the quality of a Nagra... it was the A>D that I was questioning, not the pre. At some point you need to take the analog feed from the Nagra (which has already been brought up to line level by the Nagra in the initial recording process hence no need for an additional pre in the transfer process. Just an unneeded set of cables and circuts between the Nagra and the CD recorder)to digital and I'd rather have a 722 do it than a standalone consumer burner.... YMMV.
I have now listened to the Nagra. On my systems at least I prefer Brian's an my copies. The nagra copy sounds distant to me and a bit muddy in comparison... but that's on my system which tends to be warm given that its all tubes.

this recording only has 60 DL's but sounds MUCH better and realistic.... DL'ed that one after listening to them all it was superior ... He also has the Rave show from Milwaukee the prior night.
great show all and all, i just wish i could say im sorry to them personally for accidentally throwing that glow stick at dave j. I was wasted and i meant for it to stay in the croud! oops, now every time i listen to this recording i think of that dumb move after ramblers anthem.
i give it 2 for trying, but i bet u were one of the guys up from in the crowd as opposed to back at the board.
I HIGHLY ReaCOMMEND THIS ONE FOR THE CONGRESS!!

Subject: HA ha ha
It was a sick show. I nearly died twice.
Some people seemed to resent us having a good time and getting up front though. Fascist Hippies suck!

Maybe convince the band not to play terrible sounding venues. :P
